I turned into the yard and parked at the house.

“Just because we’re home, doesn’t mean you get to skip out on the childhood talk,” she said, surprising me.

We got out of the truck and walked into the house. It was late, but I didn’t want our night to end. About twenty minutes later, Kate came out of the bathroom and crawled into bed next to me. “Tell me about you.”

“Dad was a ranch boss, so we didn’t have free run of the ranch. I played football most of the year in one league or another. Actually I got into the University of Montana on a football scholarship. I started team roping with Rob when he was old enough, but nothing serious.”

I looked over at Kate to see she was listening intently. “Our life wasn’t exciting, and absolutely nothing like it is now. At that time, I knew the only way to get out of there was school, so that’s why I went into business and marketing.”

“I bet you were popular,” she said as she rested her head on the pillow.

I nodded yes. “I had friends around all the time, and always a girlfriend.”

We sat in silence for a few moments and Kate leaned in to me. “Good night, thank you for turning tonight into a fantastic evening.”

I kissed her. This kiss was different from the one we’d shared in the parking lot of the bar. It was tender, loving, and sensual. Kate sighed contently, laid her head on my shoulder, and fell asleep.

That night when we went to sleep, I finally felt like I knew my wife. We had shared more intimate moments, more about our lives before each other, things that we should have found out before our marriage. Tonight I felt like I had gone on a date with my wife. It was not just the day to day, but we’d really spent time together. We flirted and had fun. It was the kind of time we had together in New Orleans, but had not had here. I would plan a night out for us in a few days.
